The MINDSTORMS NXT 1.0 is a programmable LEGO robotics set released in July 2006. It contains motors, sensors, and various parts and pieces used to create virtually any type of robot of your choice. Included with the set is NXT-G: a drag-and-drop graphical programming language written in LabVIEW.

With the rise in popularity of the Mindstorms NXT many third party companies like Mindsensors and Dexter Industries were started to create additional sensors and hardware compatible with the set. Additionally, many third-party programs such as NXC, NBC, leJOS, and RobotC were created for use with the NXT sets.


The set features four models starter models ranging from easy to difficult. It also has information on how to program the models. The instructions can be found on the programming software included with the set. The instructions are very clear and concise; they thoroughly explain each and every step.

Support for these models are gone, so it is recommended to find your model online and build something user-made not made by LEGO



Tribot is the easiest model of them all, and known as the "starter model". It is a simple two-wheeled robot, equipped with a claw, touch sensor, light sensor, and ultrasonic sensor used for finding and grabbing small objects.



Spike is the second most difficult model. He is a six-legged scorpion that has the ability to scoot around and hit things with its retractable tail. It uses an ultrasonic sensor for object avoidance, and a touch sensor at the tip of the tail so it knows when it hits something.



Roboarm T-56 is the second hardest model. It is a three DOF arm, that uses a light sensor and touch sensor to grasp and recognize different objects.

Alpha RexEdit


Alpha Rex is the most difficult to build robot included in models. It is a two-legged humanoid robot, that uses every sensor and motor included in the set. It is, by far, the most popular model of all the included models.
