Atlas (Agile Anthropomorphic Robot) is an autonomous humanoid robot developed by Boston Dynamics. Atlas can walk bipedally leaving the upper limbs free to lift or carry. In extremely exigent terrain, Atlas is strong and coordinated enough to climb using his hands and feet. Articulated, sensate hands enable Atlas to use tools designed for human use. Atlas includes 28 hydraulically-actuated degrees of freedom, two hands, arms, legs, feet and a torso. An articulated sensor head includes stereo cameras and a laser range finder. Atlas is powered from an off-board, electric power supply via a flexible tether. Atlas was designed for the annual DARPA Robotics Challenge program in 2013. Atlas Is being primarily being developed for search and rescue, as the military announced they have no use for Atlas. In 2014 six Atlases will be tested at the DARPA robotics challenge. An animation showing Atlas plug in a hose has also been created.
